Tens of thousands of DNA samples are sitting on shelves at the Arizona Department of Public Safety crime lab waiting to be analyzed. The samples have been piling up for at least a year, and officials worry that the burgeoning backlog is just the "tip of the iceberg." And each day, at least four more U.S. mail tubs filled with DNA samples arrive at the Phoenix lab from prisons, jails and probation offices across the state. Some days, 800 samples arrive.
